5 Haunted Halloween Getaways: Where to Stay & What to Book

Plan a Halloween getaway in Salem, Savannah, New Orleans, St. Augustine or Victoria, with hotel guides, ghost tours, October 2026 events and practical itineraries.

The October escape · 2026 planning guide

Choose the kind of Halloween you want to come home talking about.

A crowded Witch City street, a New Orleans parade, a candlelit historic house, or an old-town walk that ends beside the harbour: these five getaways offer very different ways to spend October.

Start with the atmosphere you want, then pair a real place to stay with one memorable evening. Below you’ll find suggested trip lengths, practical short itineraries, hotel guides and direct booking links.

Researched September 15, 2026. Event dates below come from the linked organisers. Tour calendars, room availability and prices can change. These are researched selections, not firsthand reviews; reported hauntings are folklore, not a promised experience.

Which Halloween getaway fits you?

Our suggested lengths include time for a proper daytime visit and an evening experience. Add your travel days separately. The crowd descriptions are planning judgements, not attendance forecasts.

Salem: for the full Halloween atmosphere

Allow: 2–3 nights · Base: downtown Salem, or a place with a workable rail connection · Best fit: travellers who enjoy costumes, crowds and a busy events calendar

Salem works when you want the whole town to be part of the trip. Build your day around one or two history stops, then enjoy the seasonal streets without trying to collect every attraction. October is also a time to be thoughtful about the distinction between Halloween entertainment and the real people persecuted during the witch trials.

The seasonal reason to go

Salem Haunted Happenings runs through October. Its published 2026 programme includes the Haunted Happenings Marketplace from September 24 to November 1 and a Halloween-night drone show over the North River at 10 p.m. on Saturday, October 31. Check the organiser’s latest programme for individual market hours, viewing advice and changes before choosing your dates.

If the festival is your priority, make room in the budget and schedule for busy weekends. If history matters more than the biggest night, compare earlier October weekdays and their available tours.

A short stay that leaves room to enjoy it

Arrival afternoon: check in, get your bearings around Essex Street and Derby Square, and eat before your evening reservation. Pick one ghost walk rather than booking overlapping departures.

Your full day: reserve the Witch House if it interests you, spend time at the Witch Trials Memorial, and leave the afternoon for the waterfront and Salem Maritime area. Keep memorial visits separate in tone from costumes and staged scares. Add a marketplace visit or another scheduled event after a proper break.

With a third night: use the extra day for a museum or the House of the Seven Gables instead of turning every hour into a queue. Check each attraction’s own admission calendar before setting the order.

Where to stay & what to book

The Hawthorne Hotel guide brings together its location, history and guest-reported ghost lore. Compare the actual room, rate conditions and parking before booking; a room associated with a story is still subject to availability.

Salem Ghosts advertises a standard one-hour ghost walk. For a more history-focused alternative, Bewitched Historical Tours describes an approximately 105-minute outdoor walk. These are separate products with different meeting instructions; neither a general tour ticket nor a story about a building guarantees admission inside.

Make it practical: the official festival site recommends the MBTA Newburyport/Rockport Line to Salem. Check the return service for your chosen night before staying for a late event. Ask your tour operator about distance, standing time and step-free options if needed.

Use our full Salem destination guide for the individual sights, or extend the journey with the Boston–Salem–Portsmouth road trip.

Savannah: for cemetery history and stories after dark

Allow: 2–3 nights · Base: the Historic District · Best fit: travellers who want daytime history alongside a ghost tour

Savannah gives you reasons to slow down: shaded squares, old brickwork, burial grounds and houses with complicated histories. Let a cemetery visit be its own experience in daylight, then choose an evening tour for storytelling. You do not need a special Halloween party to make this an atmospheric October break.

An October evening you can plan around

Ghosts & Gravestones Savannah is a regular nighttime tour available beyond Halloween. The operator lists an approximately 80-minute trolley experience, with entry to the Andrew Low House and Perkins & Sons Ship Chandlery. It requires reservations and specifically warns that October departures can sell out.

This is a tour choice for the season, not a claim that a separate 2026 festival ticket is included. Choose the date and departure on the operator’s booking page.

Give the living city as much time as its legends

First afternoon: settle into the Historic District and follow a few squares towards Colonial Park Cemetery during posted opening hours. Leave time for dinner before your tour. The point is to get familiar with the streets, not to march across the whole district before an evening walk.

Full day: make Bonaventure your main morning outing. It is outside the central sightseeing area, so arrange the journey there and back rather than assuming it is the next stop on a downtown stroll. Choose a guided cemetery visit if you want help interpreting the memorials and family histories.

Afternoon and second evening: return to town for a house museum, the riverfront or a long meal. If you add another ticketed experience, choose a different emphasis—such as a house interior—rather than repeating a similar ghost route.

Where to stay & what to book

The Marshall House is the natural hotel guide to read alongside this plan. Its documented past and reported hauntings make the building part of the trip, while the practical room and location details help you decide whether it suits your stay.

Choose Ghosts & Gravestones for a trolley-based evening, or compare the walking experience from Genteel & Bard in our destination guide. A trolley reduces some street walking but does not establish step-free access to the vehicle or historic interiors.

Know before booking: Tiqets currently lists this ticket as nonrefundable and not reschedulable; review the booking terms before paying. Ghosts & Gravestones rates its Savannah experience PG-13, requires under-18s to have an adult, and notes that strobe effects may be used. Confirm suitability and access for your party. Cemetery entry after closing is not included simply because a tour discusses the cemetery.

Our Savannah guide adds context and more stops. For a longer holiday, the Savannah–Jekyll Island–St. Augustine route connects the two Southern getaways without treating the drive as an afterthought.

New Orleans: for a parade weekend and French Quarter ghosts

Allow: 3 nights · Base: the French Quarter or a convenient nearby hotel · Best fit: travellers who want street celebration as well as haunted history

New Orleans is the choice when your October trip needs a celebratory evening as well as a good ghost story. Build the visit around the event you actually want: the main Halloween parade falls a week before Halloween night in 2026. That difference can determine which hotel nights and flights make sense.

Put this date in the right weekend

The organiser lists Krewe of BOO! 2026 for Saturday, October 24 at 6:30 p.m. Its published route travels through the French Quarter and towards the Warehouse District. Use the organiser’s route map and latest notices to pick a viewing position and plan the journey back to your hotel.

Book a ghost walk for a different evening. A parade, a timed tour and a restaurant reservation across the route are an awkward combination even if their start times look compatible on paper.

A three-night plan

Arrival evening: leave enough time to check in, eat and reach a booked French Quarter ghost walk. If your arrival is uncertain, keep this evening flexible and put the tour on your final night.

Parade day: explore Jackson Square and a nearby museum or historic interior earlier in the day. Pause at the hotel before returning for the parade; choose a dinner plan that does not depend on crossing a crowded route at the last minute.

The next day: choose a separate cemetery or history experience, then leave the afternoon for food, architecture or a different neighbourhood. Check the particular cemetery’s visitor rules and authorised tour arrangements. A French Quarter ghost walk should not be assumed to include cemetery entry.

Where to stay & what to book

Compare the Bourbon Orleans and Hotel Monteleone guides for two historic French Quarter bases with their own reported ghost lore. Look at the exact room and noise considerations as well as the story attached to the building.

The New Orleans Ghost Adventures 6-in-1 tour on Klook is the 90-minute French Quarter walk already featured in our city guide. Its themes range across ghost stories and local supernatural lore. For another format, compare the approximately two-hour Haunted History Ghosts & Legends tour.

The Klook listing includes considerable walking and stairs and lists the experience as unsuitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Check the selected product’s latest route, access, meeting point and cancellation terms before paying.

Klook is an affiliate booking link.

Find more context in our New Orleans guide. With extra days, use the Louisiana river road trip; collect a rental car for the onward journey rather than making it the centre of your French Quarter weekend.

St. Augustine: for a haunted inn and candlelit history

Allow: 2–3 nights · Base: the Historic District · Best fit: couples and history-minded travellers who want a small-city break

St. Augustine can be a particularly satisfying choice if you want your evening to take place inside a historic building. Pair the old streets and bayfront with a museum experience that explores how earlier residents understood death and remembrance, then return to an inn or hotel with a character of its own.

A confirmed October 2026 museum experience

The Ximenez-Fatio House Museum lists Mortality and Mourning: Women in Black, a candlelight tour about women, grief, mourning customs and spiritualism. Its October 2026 calendar includes October 23, 24, 30 and 31, with additional dates earlier in the month.

The operator describes an experience without jump scares, but with death-related themes and dim lighting. Upper floors require wooden stairs; there are also uneven surfaces and level changes. Read the detailed access notes and select the actual date and time before building your evening around it.

Two days with a different mood each evening

First afternoon: start around Aviles Street and the central plaza. Give yourself a meal and a rest before the candlelight visit. Keep the museum’s address and arrival instructions handy, especially if you have booked a later sitting.

Full day: visit Castillo de San Marcos during its opening hours, then walk the bayfront and old streets. For Tolomato Cemetery, check its limited public-opening schedule before planning to enter; an exterior look from the public street is a different visit.

Second evening: choose a city ghost tour if you want more folklore, or make the lighthouse your separate outing if an appropriate evening ticket is available. The lighthouse is away from the central historic streets: leave time for transport, and check the tower-climbing and age rules for the specific experience.

Where to stay & what to book

St. Francis Inn openly includes ghost lore in its own storytelling, including accounts associated with Lily’s Room. Ask for the room you want and compare any current paranormal package with tours booked separately, so you understand what your stay includes.

Casa Monica Resort & Spa offers a larger historic hotel base. Our recommendation is for its architecture and location; it is not a claim of a verified haunting. Compare parking, additional charges and the particular room’s access features.

Our St. Augustine guide connects the hotels, lighthouse, museums and tours. For the actual visiting rules, use Tolomato Cemetery and the lighthouse’s official visitor page. Add the city to the coastal road trip from Savannah if you have more time.

Victoria: for old-town stories and a harbour weekend

Allow: 2 nights · Base: downtown or the Inner Harbour · Best fit: travellers who want a compact ghost-story break in Canada

Victoria is a good fit when you would rather build your Halloween trip around a guide’s stories than a large street celebration. Stay near the harbour, spend the day in the old town, then let an evening walk show you how familiar streets acquire another character after dark.

Check the October meeting point

Discover the Past’s Ghostly Walks advertises 60-minute ghost walks, with nightly operation from May through October. Its current FAQ says Halloween walks in October start at the main gate to Market Square, 560 Johnson Street, rather than the usual visitor-centre location used by many of its other walks.

Book online in advance and follow your ticket’s meeting instructions. This is the operator’s published seasonal offering; check the live calendar for your 2026 departure rather than assuming every time slot is available.

A two-night plan without rushing across the island

Arrival day: check in, stroll the Inner Harbour, then have an early dinner before your ghost walk. Allow time to find the correct Market Square gate. Pack a rain layer and shoes you are happy standing in while listening to stories.

Full day: explore the old town and Chinatown in daylight. Treat the neighbourhood’s history as more than a spooky backdrop: pause for its businesses, architecture and cultural stories as well as the narrow lanes. Leave the afternoon for a museum or choose a separate visit to Craigdarroch Castle.

Departure morning: enjoy the harbour before travelling home. If Ross Bay Cemetery is a priority, give it a separate daylight block and arrange transport; it is not part of a short downtown loop. A guided historical cemetery walk can add meaning to names and monuments that are easy to overlook alone.

Where to stay & what to book

Read our Fairmont Empress guide for a landmark harbour hotel with longstanding reported ghost lore. Compare it with other downtown accommodation on total cost, room features and distance to your chosen tour. You can enjoy the city’s ghost stories without paying for a particular hotel legend.

Ghostly Walks is an outdoor walking experience. The operator’s FAQ describes walking distances and warns that some ghost-tour content may not suit young children. Ask about the exact October route, surfaces and rest opportunities if mobility or stamina affects your choice; do not assume the itinerary enters the buildings discussed.

Use the Victoria destination guide for individual sights and cemetery context. If you are arriving by ferry, plan the terminal transfers and sailing separately from downtown activities. Our Vancouver Island road trip expands the stay through Colwood, the Cowichan Valley, Chemainus and Nanaimo.

Book the pieces that determine the rest of the trip

  1. Choose the right date. Halloween is Saturday, October 31 in 2026, but New Orleans’ Krewe of BOO! is October 24. Museum experiences and guided walks have their own calendars.
  2. Check the anchor experience and accommodation together. Look at both before committing to a non-refundable room. If a certain tour is the reason for travelling, establish that it has a suitable departure.
  3. Read the full room cost. Include taxes, parking, mandatory fees, transport and any package extras. Compare cancellation deadlines as carefully as the headline rate.
  4. Choose one main evening experience per night. Leave time for food, the walk to the meeting point and any check-in requirement. Crowded October streets make tight connections less comfortable.
  5. Plan one worthwhile daytime visit. A house museum, historic district or cemetery visit gives the stories context. Check admission and opening days separately from the evening tour.
  6. Match the experience to your party. Confirm age guidance, stairs, standing time, dim lighting, effects and whether an accessible alternative is actually offered.

A good ghost trip still needs a practical plan

Keep a weather-flexible afternoon, save ticket details offline and arrange the trip back to your hotel. Cemeteries are places of remembrance: use authorised entrances and posted hours, keep clear of services and never treat a closed gate as an invitation to explore.

Our photographs show the real destinations in different seasons; they do not document the listed 2026 events. Follow the linked organisers for current event imagery, exact schedules and booking terms.
