Florida · Haunted destination guide
Follow ghost stories through the Old City, step inside a former jail, and spend an evening beneath the striped lighthouse. Here’s how to turn St. Augustine’s haunted reputation into a getaway you can actually plan.
St. Augustine rewards a slower kind of paranormal trip. Give its historic places a daylight visit, then return to their stories after dark with a guide. You can build a weekend around an outdoor ghost walk, a theatrical trolley outing, or a lighthouse experience with time to investigate. They offer very different evenings, so choosing the right format matters more than choosing the scariest advertisement.

Why St. Augustine feels haunted
Spanish St. Augustine was established in 1565, but the region’s human history reaches much further back. Timucuan communities lived in northeastern Florida before European colonization. That distinction matters when a tour introduces the “oldest city”: the colonial founding date is one chapter in a much longer story. The National Park Service’s Timucuan history provides background beyond the familiar colonial landmarks.
Much of the atmosphere comes from how closely the city’s different histories sit together. A street walk can bring you from old defensive works to a burial ground and on toward buildings associated with later tourism. The same short route can support architectural history in daylight and ghost storytelling at night. You do not need to believe every account to enjoy noticing those layers.
Keep two questions separate as you explore: what happened here, and what do people say happens here now? Records can establish a building’s age or its use as a prison. They cannot, by themselves, establish that a modern sound or shadow is paranormal. A worthwhile guide should be comfortable distinguishing a documented event, a local legend and a visitor’s reported experience.
Historic places and ghost stories
Castillo de San Marcos: begin with the history
Start your orientation at the waterfront fort. Construction of the stone Castillo began in 1672, replacing earlier wooden defences. Its coquina masonry and projecting bastions were practical responses to warfare. Looking at the material and layout makes the site more interesting than treating every dark opening as a ghost-story setting. Read the NPS account of its founding and architecture and construction.
The fort’s later use included the imprisonment of Native Americans by the United States. The park’s historical accounts explain this difficult history. Give that interpretation time during your visit; a dramatic legend should not displace the experiences of people who were actually confined here.
Plan your visit: treat the interior as a daytime stop. The current schedule lists last admission at 5 p.m. and closure at 5:15 p.m.; park grounds close from midnight until 6 a.m. A ghost walk past the fort does not include interior access unless its ticket explicitly says so. Check current hours and alerts before setting out.
St. Augustine Lighthouse: maritime history after dark
The lighthouse is a natural focus for an evening devoted to a single location. Its 1874 tower and historic keepers’ home provide a setting very different from the downtown streets. In the museum’s own ghost storytelling, figures such as Eliza Pittee and former keepers have become part of the site’s folklore. These are stories presented by the museum, not independently established hauntings.
Choose the ticket according to what you want to do there. The museum currently separates its mixed ghost experience from an investigation-only session and a storytelling tour. A general daytime ticket should not be assumed to include an evening event. The comparison below explains the differences so you can reserve the intended experience.
Access: reaching the observation deck means climbing 219 steps, with no elevator. Children must meet the 44-inch height requirement and climb independently. There are accessible alternatives around the museum, including the main floor of the Keepers’ House and a video view from the top. Read the museum’s visitor FAQ and ask which areas your selected evening ticket uses.

The Old Jail: choose history, theatre or investigation
The Old Jail at 167 San Marco Avenue dates to 1891. Its outward appearance was deliberately softened, while the interior served a very different purpose. Today, the operator’s daytime experience uses costumed interpretation to introduce the building, cells and former occupants. It is a useful option if you want to see the place without making a late-night activity the centre of your day. The advertised daytime tour lasts approximately 30 minutes. See the Old Jail’s official visitor information.
Before buying multiple tickets, compare what each one includes. A daytime museum visit, a ghost-trolley stop and a dedicated investigation can involve the same building but differ greatly in pace and presentation. For a short weekend, select the version that interests you most, then use your other evening for the Old City streets or lighthouse.
Tolomato Cemetery: plan around its open day
Tolomato’s history includes a Franciscan mission village associated with Guale people, the arrival of Minorcans in St. Augustine in 1777, and its later use as a Catholic parish cemetery. The preservation association’s work gives visitors a way to learn about these communities through the burial ground itself. This is a place to approach as a historic cemetery, even if you first hear its name on a ghost tour.
Public entry is limited: the association normally opens the cemetery on the third Saturday of each month, 11 a.m.–2 p.m., with free self-guided and docent-led visits. Special events can differ. Check the Tolomato Cemetery Preservation Association’s calendar before arranging your trip around entry. If it is closed, keep your visit outside the gate at 14 Cordova Street; an evening tour nearby does not grant permission to go inside.
The City Gates and the Old City streets
The City Gates make a useful visual starting point for exploring the streets on foot. Walk through them in daylight, notice the stonework, and use the surrounding streets to orient yourself before your evening departure. Save your tour’s actual meeting instructions on your phone: being near a familiar landmark is not the same as being at the correct check-in point.
Allow some unscheduled time here. A haunted getaway works better when every walk is not a race between tickets. Pick a short route, pause for the buildings that interest you, and leave room for dinner before the night’s activity. Be considerate around doorways and private homes, especially when taking photographs.

A shorter haunted-history walk
Old City Ghosts by US Ghost Adventures
Wraiths of the Watchtower · Walking tour · About 60 minutes
Old City Ghosts offers an evening of local legends and haunted-history storytelling around St. Augustine. The standard walk is listed at about one hour, with an extended option available. This is a separate operator and booking from Destination Ghost Tours’ Ghosts of the Old City.
The current tour page places the meeting point at the white obelisk in Plaza de la Constitución. Use the instructions on your booking confirmation, and check walking access, the selected route and cancellation terms before paying. Do not assume entry to hotels, cemeteries or the fort is included.

The Old City on foot
Ghosts of the Old City
Destination Ghost Tours · All ages · 90 minutes
This guided walk uses the historic district’s public streets for local legends and haunted-history storytelling. It remains outdoors: entry to private buildings and paid attractions is excluded. Choose it if atmosphere and a guide’s narration appeal more than staged scares.
The operator describes the route as wheelchair accessible, while noting brick paths, curbs and uneven surfaces. Written story transcripts are available through its Tour Companion; request access ahead of time if useful. Confirm the exact meeting location when reserving.

Ghosts & Gravestones
Historic Tours of America · PG-13 · 80 minutes
The trolley combines narration with walking and advertised nighttime entry to the Old Jail and Potter’s Wax Museum’s Chamber of Horrors. It boards at 27 San Marco Avenue. Choose it for a performed ghost-tour experience; the operator warns that it is unsuitable for young children.
Wheelchair lifts are available, with one wheelchair or scooter space per trolley; request it at least 24 hours ahead. Historic interiors, including the Old Jail, are not fully accessible. Ask about flashing effects if relevant to your group.

Stay with one haunted location
Dark of the Moon Ghost Experience
St. Augustine Lighthouse & Maritime Museum · Anastasia Island
The museum describes a combination of haunted-history stories, investigation time, exploration of the Lightkeepers’ House and grounds, and a weather-dependent tower climb. Expect darkness. Confirm the selected session’s duration, age rules and available areas before booking.
For a different emphasis, its separate Investigation-Only offering lasts three hours, while Lighthouse Ghost Tales focuses on guided storytelling for families and history-minded visitors. Check the exact product name when reserving.
View lighthouse ghost experiences ↗The providers set prices, availability, routes and cancellation terms. Review the current ticket details before paying. None of these experiences can guarantee a paranormal encounter.
Where to stay for a haunted getaway
For a first visit centred on evening walks, we would prioritise a Historic District address. Compare the total stay cost and practical details before choosing a room for its ghost story: parking, stairs, check-in arrangements and the route back after your tour all affect the weekend.
An inn with its own ghost lore
St. Francis Inn
The inn dates to 1791 and openly includes hauntings in its own storytelling. Lily’s Room is one of the rooms associated with reported sightings; these accounts are part of the property’s folklore, rather than a promise about what a guest will experience. The inn also advertises a paranormal package, so compare its current inclusions with any tour you plan to book separately. See the inn’s account of its ghost lore and current packages.
Ask for the particular room and access arrangements you want before paying. A historic property’s rooms can differ substantially, and a memorable stay still needs a comfortable bed and a practical location.

Casa Monica Resort & Spa
Originally built in 1888, Casa Monica sits in the Historic District near Flagler College, the Lightner Museum and St. George Street. Marriott’s description emphasises its historic architecture, decorative interiors and resort amenities. It suits a traveller who wants a larger hotel as the base for independently booked ghost tours.
Our full hotel guide also explores attributed ghost stories, keeping those accounts separate from documented history. Compare the room rate with parking and other charges, and check the precise room’s accessibility features on the booking page.

Plan a three-day haunted St. Augustine getaway
Day 1: learn the streets, then hear their stories
Arrive with enough daylight for an unhurried orientation walk. Begin around the City Gates and continue through the Old City, noting where your evening tour meets. If arrival time allows, visit the Castillo; otherwise, put the interior visit on your next morning. Check into your accommodation, have an early dinner and take the Ghosts of the Old City walk. Leave the remainder of the evening free rather than scheduling a second tour immediately afterward.
Day 2: historic sites and a lighthouse evening
Use the morning for the fort or the daytime Old Jail experience. If your dates coincide with a Tolomato open day, give that priority and adjust the other visits around it. Keep the afternoon light so that the night’s activity feels like an occasion rather than another task. Arrange transport to Anastasia Island and choose the lighthouse ticket that matches your interest. Confirm the return journey before leaving the downtown area.
Day 3: revisit what caught your attention
Return to a street or landmark you hurried past, or give your inn’s history some attention before checking out. This is also a useful buffer for a daytime activity displaced by weather. If you have a third night, consider the trolley experience for a change of format, checking for overlap with any Old Jail ticket already used. Two carefully chosen evening activities usually provide more variety than several similar walks.
Practical planning for your trip
Allow for different parts of town
Group nearby downtown sights together, and treat the lighthouse as a separate outing. Save the addresses attached to your reservations rather than relying on a business name alone. The Old Jail’s attraction address and the ghost trolley’s boarding address are different. Leave time for parking, walking from the car and checking in; the departure time is not your arrival target.
Choose your weather trade-off
For a trip built around walking, spring and fall are sensible starting points. NPS guidance describes hot, humid summers with frequent afternoon thunderstorms and generally mild winters with occasional cold spells. June through November is hurricane season. Use flexible plans and review current conditions and visitor guidance near departure, especially for an itinerary involving exposed waterfront areas or a tower climb.
Keep one indoor or low-effort alternative in mind, and avoid booking every available hour. Pack comfortable footwear, water and an extra layer suited to the forecast. A rain policy does not mean a tour will continue in dangerous weather; use the operator’s current cancellation and notification instructions.
Match the experience to your group
Discuss walking distance, darkness, loud effects and stairs before selecting tickets. “All ages” describes eligibility, not every child’s comfort with the stories. Likewise, a tour’s accessible vehicle does not establish that every stop is accessible. Ask a concrete question about the part that matters to you: boarding, a particular interior, step-free paths or the ability to follow spoken narration.
Keep photography and cemetery visits respectful
Photograph from permitted public areas and leave enough space for other visitors to pass. Avoid flash during narration unless the guide allows it. In cemeteries, keep clear of graves and monuments and follow the preservation volunteers’ directions. A private courtyard, locked gate or closed museum does not become open simply because it appears in a ghost story.
St. Augustine haunted-travel questions
Which experience should I choose first?
For a first visit, we would start with an outdoor guided walk to connect the streets with their stories. Choose the trolley if performance and indoor stops interest you more, or the lighthouse if you would rather spend an evening exploring one location.
Can I visit the historic cemeteries at night?
Do not assume so. Tolomato has scheduled public openings, and a ghost tour passing a cemetery does not grant entry. Check the site’s own current access rules.
How many nights do I need?
Two nights can accommodate one downtown tour, one lighthouse outing and selected daytime sights. Add a third if you want shorter days, another tour format or more flexibility for weather.
Are the ghost stories proven?
No. This guide distinguishes recorded history from folklore and reported experiences. Choose a visit for its setting, interpretation and activities; a good evening should not depend on an unexplained event occurring.
